Blog Post #12 Current View of Technology in the Classroom

I still think technology is very important. Technology is always changing so we have to prepare our students for changing technology and how it works. Technology is our future, but so is our children so I think they both go hand in hand. Children need to be able to use technology effectively to make a difference in this world and to succeed.

Blog Post #11 Non Computer Based Technology in the Classroom

I think Leap Frogs are wonderful non computer based technology for the classroom. Some students have them at home but for many they are a new experience. Leap Frogs read the story to students, help with the sounding out of words, and many other things that really help students advance in their reading skills without the direct help of a teacher. They also have fun stories that the students like and really want to read. I have seen Leap Frogs used in schools and the students using them have a blast reading and sounding out the words to the story.

Blog Post #10 ERIC Projects

Well after hearing most of the presentations, I feel like I have just had a lot of information thrown at me! So many new ideas and topics that I never thought of and now I know enough about to implement them into my future classroom. The Internet and technology is such a huge thing now a days in education, and it has to be used the right way otherwise people could get in trouble. Students have to realize these things and respect the rules and the equipment. Technology is expensive and not every school district is going to have the same things. Some are more privileged that others and some do not have enough of anything.

Blog Post #7 Half-Way Reflection

I think things are going well in this class so far. We've made it half way and have gotten a lot of assignments completed. I have learned some great sites that teachers can use in their classroom, very kid appropriate. I think it is great that children are using technology so young. Technology really is the future and they will have a leg up if they figure out how to work for them.

Blog Post #6 Internet Use in Early Childhood Classrooms

I think there are pros and cons to using the Internet in the early childhood classroom. Children can have an endless supply of knowledge about any topic if they use the Internet. They can also learn how to find credible sites at an earlier age. A con would be if they started to believe that everything they found on the Internet is true. They should also be careful to stay away from inappropriate Internet sites. I know schools block sites that they feel are bad, but if the students are using the Internet at home they might run into some things they should not see.

Blog Post #5 What Kindergarteners Need to Know

I think it is a great idea to have a list of things kindergartners need to know before entering first grade. To get into kindergarten children need to know certain things, so I think it is great that they are continuing that into first grade. Some of those requirements I would not expect kindergartners to know, they seem too hard. But, I guess having high expectations is better then not expecting the students to learn anything.

Blog Post #4 Digital Image Assignment

This is a picture of my dog Suzy. For this assignment I would have preschoolers or kindergartners look at different pictures of animals. Some would be jungle animals, water animals, animals from the zoo, and domestic pets. They would have to choose which ones people can have as pets and which ones they can't.
After that activity, we would learn how to treat our pets and animals we might find outside. This includes asking before petting someone else's pet and not trying to catch squirrels.

Blog Post #2 Gardner, Bloom, and Dale

I have heard of Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences before. I have also learned about them in various classes. Gardner believes that there are eight different types of intelligences: linguistically, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily kinesthetical, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist. The multiple intelligences help teachers know how each of their students learn best. This will over all help students learn better. This might detract from technology use because there is no mention of technology in the eight different intelligences. These intelligences can be used with the Type I use of technology. The student can use computer programs and software that go along with their intelligence to help them learn better.

Benjamin Bloom also came up with a taxonomy of different levels of intellectual behavior important in learning. These levels from lowest to highest are knowledge, understanding, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. This is showing the best things for students to learn in order for them to be better test takers and better students in general. The third type of technology can be used with this. If the student reaches the evaluation stage then the student can use technology to work out problems and help the student solve problems.

Edgar Dale came up with a cone of experience that selects instructional resources. The cone has many different levels that depicts how well people remember something. For example, the cone says that people generally remember 10% of what they read and 20% of what they hear. This is giving better ways for people to learn and remember, teachers and other people will know the best way for others to remember what they are being taught. The second technology type can be used easily with this. The cone says that 50% of what students see and hear (as in a video) is remembered. So, the teacher can use applications that use the computer to help students remember.

Blog Post #1 Introduction

I'm Sarah and I am from Waterville Ohio which is only 10 miles from Bowling Green. I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I love watching movies and reading. I want to be a kindergarten or first grade teacher after graduation from BGSU.

I want to learn how to use computers successfully and efficiently in my future classroom and in my everyday life. Computers are are always changing and I need to be able to know how to adapt and figure things out by myself.

I think getting young children to use the computer is very necessary in today's world. The younger we start our children using computers correctly, the better they will be at using computers in the future when it is essential to their lives. Computers are also used by teachers to help with planning, grading, finding resources, and coming up with projects. I think this is great and should be utilized by every teacher to make their job just a little bit easier.
