Blog Post #5 What Kindergarteners Need to Know
I think it is a great idea to have a list of things kindergartners need to know before entering first grade. To get into kindergarten children need to know certain things, so I think it is great that they are continuing that into first grade. Some of those requirements I would not expect kindergartners to know, they seem too hard. But, I guess having high expectations is better then not expecting the students to learn anything.

I agree with you that having requirements are a good thing. It is nice to have outlines on what you are suppose to teach and what the students are required to know. I am curious as to what you felt was too hard for kindergarteners. I think some of the expectations would depend on whether or not it was all day kindergarten or not.
Well, I to agree with you that requirements are a good thing for children to have to know what they must be prepared for in the next grade, but I geuss I took the article from a different stand point as to how many requirements should be put on a kindergartener as well as why was this only done four years ago? I also was wondering as to what part you were agreeing with that you felt some of the expectations were to hard. Do you think that this would be different depending on the school district? How do you think you would have to change the standards depending on the school? Just some thoughts! Good Response though! :o)
Sarah,
I also agree with how you said the expectations were too high. I do not think it is necessary that Kindergarten students need to know how to write letters or be able to understand sense of humor. I also never thought of it the way that you did which is that it is better to have high expectations than not expecting the students to learn anything. When I think about it this way it makes much more sense.
Sarah,
I think you have made some good points, especially when you pointed out the fact that you thought the standards were too hard. I understand and agree with the fact that children need to be challenged, but I think people have forgotten that children learn by playing and exploring. Kindergartners are still children and I believe that the state has put too much emphasis on expectations. I think that children, even in kindergarten, need to time to play and explore tasks independently. I think the teacher plays a role in their learning by being a guide and showing children aspects of certain things, but I think children are extremely creative and standards are restricting student’s abilities to be creative and learn independently, while making learning fun and enjoyable.
Just like you said, I think the requirements are great. It gives teachers something to go off of and know exactly what the state is expecting they know. I do think potentially some of the expectations may be too far fetched for kindergarteners to know, but i agree, it's better to have standards that are too high then to not expect very much out of the students. Also, this article makes me wonder if we are going to revamp our standards too. I hope so!
